She is the president and CEO of RESPOND Against Violence, an organization that integrates the experience of individuals, communities, and systems to improve the collective response to violence and trauma. Kelsey trains and consults nationally to implement sustainable protocols and strengthen how communities collaborate, investigate, treat and prosecute strangulation and cases ranging from intimate partner violence, human trafficking, sexual assault, child abuse, and homicide.

OUR SOCIAL WORKER: Erica Olson, MSS, MLSP — A consultant, trainer, and subject matter expert specializing in gender-based violence and trauma-informed care and management, Erica draws on her 20 years of experience in direct services, advocacy, policy, and applied research to aid nonprofits, government agencies, and the private sector in advancing their knowledge and practices around interpersonal violence and abuse, gender inequality, and trauma. Currently, she provides case and program consultation, expert witness testimony, training, and technical assistance.  Erica has been appointed to multiple state and national efforts, including the CDC’s Rape Prevention and Education Program and National Violent Death Reporting System.  She is the former Director of the NJ Domestic Violence Fatality and Near Fatality Review Board and has co-authored curricula, policy, regulations, and legislation. Her work has been published in the peer-reviewed Victims and Violence.

About David Adams, Ed.D.: David is the co-founder and Co-Director of Emerge, the first counseling program in the nation for men who abuse women. David has led groups for abusers for over 40 years and parenting education groups for 18 years.

He is one of the nation’s leading experts on abusers and abuser interventions and has conducted training of social service and criminal justice professionals in over 47 states and 22 nations.  He has published numerous articles and book chapters on domestic violence. His book, Why Do They Kill? Men Who Murder Their Intimate Partners was published in 2007.

David is also the co-chair of the Criminal Justice Committee of the Massachusetts Council on Domestic Violence and has also served as Director of the National Danger Assessment Training Project. He is a frequent Expert Witness on court cases involving allegations of domestic violence.

Janine holds a Masters in Public Policy (MPP) from UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs. Janine has spoken around the world on the spectrum of sexual assault and intimate partner violence. Audiences include the United States Navy, universities, shelters, Major League Baseball, and corporations because the idea that ‘what happens in the home, stays in the home’ is getting people killed. Instead, she advocates for people to talk, tell their stories, and thus free others to tell theirs.

Janine did not begin her career as an advocate. At the time that she made the switch, she was writing for magazines like O, The Oprah Magazine, Parents, Fitness, Family Circle, and Woman’s Day. Then her family suffered a great tragedy, and she realized that it was time to talk.

On today’s show: We will focus on the impact of emotional abuse and discuss what it looks like, what the risks are, and why it matters. Janine will share her story and help us all understand the importance of acknowledging and talking about our experiences.

The topic of today’s show: The long-term impact of surviving gun violence.

About Kate: In November 2012, Kate Ranta’s estranged husband, an Air Force Major, appeared at her apartment and shot Kate twice and her father twice in front of her then 4-year-old son. Everyone survived. Her attempted murderer was found guilty in 2017 on all five counts against him and sentenced to 60 years in prison.

Kate now elevates her story for activism and awareness around violence against women–especially the deadly intersection between abuse and guns. She has been a gun violence prevention activist for many years. A public speaker and marketing professional who has appeared in documentary films, national media, and expert panels, she is the author of Killing Kate: A Story of Turning Abuse and Tragedy into Transformation and Triumph.

Tracy and Kate talk about: 

• Statistics show that a woman is 500% more likely to die when a gun is present in a domestic violence situation. Do you feel guns make women safer, and how do you respond when asked if you wish you’d had a gun yourself during your shooting?
• Did the fact that your abuser was in the military make him seem more honorable and trustworthy when you met him?
• Did your abuser lie to law enforcement and his defense attorney about his military service to make himself more sympathetic, and did it work?
• Did you experience patriarchy and misogyny when reporting your abuser to his commanders? What were you told after he was investigated internally and found guilty?
