About Don’t Drive Left Lane in Alexandria: Pete Reilly’s novel is a tribute to the unforgettable years of 1973–74 in Alexandria, Virginia, where he lived and came of age as a high school senior.
Set against the vivid, humid backdrop of Alexandria, Virginia, in the summer of 1973, Don’t Drive Left Lane in Alexandria offers an authentic, rich slice of American life during a period of profound cultural shift. The novel follows high school senior Johnathon “Cowboy” Murphy, his family, and a tight-knit group of local characters as they navigate a rapidly changing country. From street-level coming-of-age moments at neighborhood basketball courts and local music haunts like “Bait’s” to high-society Fourth of July gatherings at historic estates, Reilly weaves an immersive narrative filled with iconic music, local sports, and regional history.
The book’s inspiration struck Reilly after years of reading about “The Greatest Generation”—the era of his father, who fought in World War II. Reilly realized that his own generation, the children of those World War II veterans who came of age during the tumultuous early 1970s, possessed a unique resilience, culture, and story worthy of being honored. Don’t Drive Left Lane in Alexandria captures the spirit, struggles, and everyday lives of the people who lived through 1973 and 1974.
Key themes include:
- 1970s Youth & High School Culture: Navigating high school life, neighborhood friendships, and coming-of-age in Northern Virginia during the era of T.C. Williams High School championship pride.
- Historical & Political Backdrop: The omnipresent hum of the Watergate hearings, gas shortages, race relations, and the shifting social dynamics of the early ’70s.
- Military Veterans & POW/MIA: Deep respect for military families, World War II veterans, and Vietnam War service members, highlighted by a formal dedication to the missing and unaccounted-for U.S. soldiers from the Vietnam War.
- Music & Pop Culture: A nostalgic soundtrack integrated directly into the story, complete with a curated Spotify and Apple Music playlist guide featuring classic hits of the era.
- Corporate Power & Working-Class Realities: Real-world struggles of blue-collar utility line crews, corporate accountability, and local community bonds.
